The Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI)<\/a> guidelines, implemented in the year 2000, sought to ensure all children get the help they need for their hearing loss. The goal of this program is for all babies to be screened for hearing loss<\/a> no later than one month of age; if a baby does not pass the screening, they receive a diagnostic hearing test no later than three months of age; and children diagnosed with hearing loss undergo intervention services no later than six months of age.<\/p>\n

The CDC estimates that with the EHDI program in place, about 98% of all children born in the United States have had their hearing screened, meaning treatment can start as early as possible. For many babies, this means wearing hearing aids.<\/p>\n
