<\/p>\nThere are 48 million individuals in Portland and throughout the United States who suffer from hearing loss. Of those, 80 percent don\u2019t use a hearing aid. While we are not sure why so many people would simply turn their back on a proven hearing loss treatment, we suspect that many simply do not want to admit they have a problem. Many others still think of hearing aids as those clunky models their grandparents wore decades ago.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I am here. To show you what you think you know about hearing aids may not be what is actually true.<\/p>\n
Misconception:<\/b> Hearing aids will make me look older.<\/p>\n
What makes you look older, not being to hear or communicate effectively with others or a small device sitting in your ear? Exactly. And, if you are still concerned, many of the hearing devices available today are so tiny they fit into your ear canal and are virtually invisible to others.<\/p>\n
Misconception:<\/b> Hearing aids aren\u2019t worth the expense.<\/p>\n
While no one is denying that hearing aids are an investment, the return on the purchase is substantial. Research studies indicate 9 out of 10 people with hearing devices believe their quality of life has improved. Improved communication is just one of the benefits of hearing devices; users report improvements in their relationships, emotional and physical wellbeing, self-confidence, sense of humor, mental and cognitive skills and sense of safety. <\/p>\n
Misconception:<\/b> Buying hearing aids from an audiologist is a waste of money when you can just buy them from a big-box retailer or online.<\/p>\n
While it is true that hearing aids are slightly less expensive when purchased from a large store or online it is important to note that you get more from an audiologist than just the device. In order to confirm the correct hearing aid for your type and degree of hearing loss your Portland audiologist will perform a series of tests. Once the correct device has been determined, your audiologist will use an extremely sensitive computer in order to program the device to match your levels of hearing loss. Periodic follow-up visit will then be scheduled. At these visits your audiologist will fine-tune and adjust the device to make sure it is working well. They will also complete any necessary repairs. You will never get this level of care from the one-size-fits-all big-box retailers.<\/p>\n
Misconception:<\/b> The smaller the hearing aid the better.<\/p>\n
Hearing aids have come a long way. There are some that are so small they are actually implanted in the ear, making them practically invisible. This type of device only works for those with mild hearing loss. In addition, these smaller devices typically have fewer additional features and a shorter battery life. The most common models are behind-the-ear and receiver-in-the-ear. While slightly more visible, they are suitable for all types of hearing loss and enable the user to get more from the device.
